It's the news no one ever wants to post. Nollywood star Adunni Ade has announced that her beloved mother has died after a long battle with illness.
Here’s what we know, in brief:
The actress and filmmaker broke the news on her Instagram on Monday, 19th October, confirming her mum passed away on Sunday, 18th October.
She opened with the deeply moving Islamic prayer: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return,” before writing: “With a heavy heart and submission to the will of Almighty Allah, I announce the passing of my beloved mother, who returned to her Creator after a long battle with illness.”
She prayed for Allah to forgive her shortcomings, make her grave spacious and filled with light, and grant her Al-Jannah Firdaus.
This one cuts deep. Adunni has always been open about how close she was to her mum, her German-Irish-American mother who raised her in Queens, New York, before she moved back to Nigeria to build her Nollywood career. Just months ago, she was posting from a hospital in Kentucky, visiting her ailing mum.
Now she writes simply: “Mum, I love you. May Allah grant you eternal peace and reunite us in Jannah.” It’s that raw, universal daughter-to-mother love we all recognise.
For context, Adunni Ade, 50, is one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, model turned actress turned filmmaker, born to a German-Irish mother and Yoruba Nigerian father. She’s built a career balancing Hollywood roots with Yoruba cinema, and has often spoken about her mum as her anchor.
In Yoruba culture and indeed across Nigeria, losing a matriarch is a communal loss; she leaves behind children, grandchildren, sisters and loved ones, as Adunni noted. For fans who’ve followed her journey from Queens to Lagos, this feels personal.
The family says funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. For now, Adunni has asked for prayers and privacy as they navigate this painful loss.
It’s a reminder that behind the red carpets and film premieres, our faves are dealing with the same grief we all do.
Rest in peace, Mama.
