Just when he’d finally put the injuries behind him...
If you’re a Chelsea fan, you’ll know that sinking feeling. One minute your captain is flying, the next he’s in the treatment room. And it’s happened again.
Chelsea skipper Reece James is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery, with the club confirming he will miss around three months.
It’s a gut-punch for the player, for new boss Xabi Alonso, and for Chelsea supporters who thought his injury nightmare was finally over.
He’d even pulled out of the most recent England break as a precaution - with England due to face Croatia at Wembley in early November - to manage his load. This just feels cruel.
More Than Just a Right-Back
You have to feel for Reece. This is a lad who has been at Chelsea since he was six years old. He’s lived the dream, captained his boyhood club, but his body has so often let him down at the worst possible moments.
Those who know him say he’s been in a brilliant place mentally under Alonso. The Spaniard trusted him to be his midfield general, a new challenge he was relishing. To have that momentum stopped by a freak training incident is the stuff players have nightmares about.
As Alonso himself said: “It’s a disappointment for everyone, for him... We support him, he will stay close to the team, he’s a great influence even when he’s not available.”
That influence matters. Even injured, James is the leader in that dressing room.
Why It Matters?
This isn’t just about missing a player. This is about what James is to this Chelsea team.
The data: Since his debut in 2019, James has missed over 80 games for Chelsea through injury. Last season was his best since 2021/22, logging 35+ appearances across all competitions for the first time in three years. Chelsea win percentage with James in the starting XI is consistently 12-15% higher than without him.
The tactical headache: Alonso, 44, has turned James into a midfield controller, not just an overlapping full-back. He’s irreplaceable in that system. And with vice-captain Enzo Fernandez sold to Manchester City in the summer for a joint-British record £125m, leadership is suddenly thin on the ground.
The fixture nightmare: Look at what Chelsea】 face now without him. As reported by cbinewstv.com, they travel to Everton on Saturday, then host London rivals Tottenham, face Liverpool away in the Carabao Cup, and then welcome Manchester United to the Bridge. That’s a season-defining fortnight without your captain.
Who Wears the Armband now?
Good question.
Alonso has handed the armband to Levi Colwill for the last two Premier League games against Brentford and Bournemouth, and the 22-year-old centre-back has handled it well.
But Alonso insists it’s a shared responsibility. “We have Moi [Moises Caicedo], we have Levi, we have players who take responsibility and carry that role in a perfect way,” he explained.
“Their own personality. Each one is different. Levi is different from, Moi is different, Cole, Hendo. Each one is different, Dibu [Emiliano Martinez] as well. That’s why it’s so important for me to have a mix of personalities.”
Expect Colwill to continue, with Caicedo as vice.
What’s Next?
Short-term: No panic buys, says Alonso. The Spaniard was adamant this won’t force Chelsea into the January market. “It’s not going to be a two or three-week thing, it’s going to be longer and after that we will see. Before Christmas, after Christmas, time will tell. Things have to be done properly so that he feels right,” he said. He does expect James back before January, though.
This weekend: Chelsea must cope without James AND new striker Emmanuel Emegha, who Alonso confirmed is still not fit enough to make his debut at Goodison Park against Everton.
Long-term: It’s all about getting this surgery right so we don’t see a repeat. For Chelsea, for England, and for Reece himself, the hope is that this three-month setback finally fixes the underlying knee issue for good.
Get well soon, Skip.
