Another dawn, another collapse in Lagos. This time, it’s Fadeyi, and construction workers are paying the price.
Tragedy struck in the early hours of today, Friday, 23rd October, when a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Fadeyi, Lagos.
According to cbinews.tv, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed one person dead and three adult males rescued alive. Many more are feared trapped.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency got a distress call at 12:10 a.m. and its Cobra Response Team from Onipanu Base arrived at the scene just two minutes later, at 12:12 a.m.
Rescuers heard groaning from beneath the rubble, a sign that there are still survivors. An excavator has been deployed, and search and rescue is ongoing.
The rescued victims received pre-hospital care from LASEMA paramedics and LASAMBUS before being moved to hospital. LASEMA, Lagos Fire Service, LASAMBUS and officers from Alagbon Police Division are all on the ground.
The cause? Still unknown.
These aren’t just statistics. They are bricklayers, iron-benders and labourers who slept on site to beat traffic and meet deadlines. In Lagos, that night-shift hustle often means risking your life.
This isn’t a one-off. Lagos is Nigeria’s collapse capital.
Between May 2024 and March 2025 alone, Lagos recorded 36 building-collapse incidents, 28 of them complete failures.
In 2024, there were 47 collapses across 14 states, with Lagos leading with 13 incidents.
From 2011 to 2025, Lagos recorded 171 collapses, more than half of all incidents nationwide.
Why does this keep happening?
Experts point to the same culprits every time: use of substandard materials, engagement of quacks instead of certified engineers, no soil tests, illegal addition of extra floors, and weak enforcement by regulators. Builders cut corners; officials look away.
Next Steps & What To Watch:
Rescue: LASEMA says operations will continue until the rubble is cleared.
Investigation: The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) is expected to take over to determine the cause and culpability.
Accountability: Will this site be sealed? Will the developer be charged? Historically, that part rarely happens.
For now, Fadeyi holds its breath.
