If you drive through VI, you’ll want to plan ahead. Lagos is shutting down a key stretch of Ozumba Mbadiwe for over a month.
Big traffic alert for Lagos Island - especially if you ply Victoria Island.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the Lagos State Government will begin a 35-day rehabilitation of Ozumba Mbadiwe Road this Monday, 19th October.
And this isn’t just any road. For thousands of Lagosians, Ozumba Mbadiwe is the lifeline connecting Bonny Camp, Falomo, Civic Centre and Lekki. When it sneezes, the whole of VI catches a cold.
According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the work will cover the stretch between Adetokunbo Ademola Street / Civic Centre and Samuel Manuwa Street / BJ.
To keep things moving, the state will run a contraflow on the Lagos-bound lane - so one side will take traffic both ways while the other side is being fixed.
Let’s be honest, this will hurt. Morning rush from Ajah to VI, school runs around 1004, evening traffic heading to Eko Hotel - all of that will feel it. LASTMA says its officers will be on ground, but if you’ve lived in Lagos long enough, you know 35 days on this corridor means you need to leave home earlier.
This is also part of a bigger pattern. Lagos has been on a rolling road repair drive in the last two years - from Third Mainland to Eko Bridge and now Ozumba Mbadiwe - to save roads battered by heavy traffic, flooding and years of patchwork repairs.
Your alternative routes - keep this:
If you’re coming from Bonny Camp / Falomo towards Civic Centre & Lekki: Go through Adeyemo Alakija Street, Adeola Hopewell, Akinbo Savage and Bishop Aboyade Cole, then link the expressway at School Corner, near Black Diamond, towards Sandfield.
From Falomo to Akin Adesola: Use IMB and Adetokunbo Ademola to Eko Hotel Roundabout, then Ajose Adeogun and Ligali Ayorinde to Black Diamond.
From Eko Hotel to Civic Centre: You’ll be diverted via Bishop Aboyade Cole and School Corner towards Sandfield.
If you’re exiting 1004 Estate: Turn left or make a U-turn right in front of the gate, then head through Bishop Aboyade Cole.
And for those heading from Eko Hotel to Falomo / Ikoyi: Best bet is Sanusi Fafunwa Street to Akin Adesola Street and the ramp bridge.
The government is begging motorists to plan ahead, obey LASTMA officials and be patient. The repairs are meant to end after 35 days, but Lagosians know - follow the updates.
