Retired but not tired – and finally, feeling seen. Pensioners in Akwa Ibom just got the news they’ve been waiting years to hear, and trust me, the mood at Ibom Hall in Uyo was pure joy.
So, here’s what happened.
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved a full 13th-month pension bonus for every single pensioner in the state, plus an extra N10,000 one-time welfare support to be added to their November 2026 pension. The Governor announced it on Friday, 30th October 2026, at Ibom Hall Grounds, Uyo.
And it wasn’t just any event. The State Council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) had organised a Merit Award ceremony for him. They came with an award and left with a bonus – and an endorsement for his second term in 2027.
You had to see the faces. These are men and women who gave 35 years of their lives to the state civil service – teachers, nurses, clerks, directors – many of whom, let’s be honest, spent the last decade worrying if their gratuity would ever come.
The NUP Chairman, Pastor Sylvester Nkodo, said it plainly: Governor Eno’s leadership has been “heartwarming and unprecedented” and has lifted them “from abject poverty to a life of dignity.” That tells you everything about what retirement has felt like for many Nigerian pensioners until now.
Governor Eno himself was quite moved. “This is indeed humbling to me. It shows that you are truly technocrats with a laudable sense of organisation. You may be retired but not tired. I celebrate and appreciate you greatly,” he said.
Then came the big one: “I am now directing that N10,000 be added to the November 2026 pension payment of every pensioner in support of your welfare.”
Why This Is A Big Deal:
If you know Nigeria’s pension story, you’ll know why this matters.
1. The Gratuity Mountain: Akwa Ibom inherited a massive backlog of unpaid gratuities – N111 billion, accumulated since 2012. That’s 13 years of retirees waiting. Successive administrations kept pushing it forward. According to the state government, Eno’s administration has now paid N100 billion of that backlog. He’s promised to clear the remaining N11 billion before the end of his first term.
2. The “Enomber” Culture: In Akwa Ibom, the 13th-month payment isn’t new – civil servants call it “Enomber” – a wordplay on Governor Eno’s name that started when he first approved a 13th-month salary for workers in December 2023. What’s new is extending it to pensioners. For context, the 13th-month salary is not mandated by Nigerian labour law – it’s a goodwill gesture, which is why pensioners rarely benefit. Delta and Zamfara have tried similar models, but usually at 30% of basic salary. Akwa Ibom is paying it in full.
3. Health is Wealth: The Governor also pushed pensioners to enrol in the state’s health insurance scheme – which is free for everyone 65 years and above. In a country where out-of-pocket health spending still cripples elderly households, that’s not a small footnote.
He also credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for improved federal allocations that made clearing the arrears possible.
Why It Matters:
This isn’t just about November. It’s about dignity in old age.
Nigeria has over 2 million pensioners, and for years, the narrative has been verification stress, endless queues, and “we will pay soon.” When a state government not only pays the regular pension, but also adds an extra month, throws in a welfare top-up, and clears a decade-old gratuity debt, it rewrites that story.
It matters economically too. Pensioners spend locally – in markets in Uyo, Eket, Ikot Ekpene. An extra month’s pension in December means more traders sell more goods. That N10,000 may look small in Lagos terms, but in Akwa Ibom, it pays for drugs, foodstuffs, and grandchildren’s school needs.
And politically? The NUP didn’t hide it. A motion moved by Comrade James Inim and seconded by Dr Mrs Uduak Udoaka saw pensioners unanimously endorse President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Umo Eno and other APC candidates for 2027.
What Exactly Is 13th-Month Pension?
Think of it like this: You work for 12 months and get paid for 12 months. A 13th-month bonus means you get paid an extra full month, usually in December, as a thank-you.
For pensioners, it means your monthly pension is doubled in that month. If you normally receive N50,000, you’ll receive N100,000 plus the N10,000 welfare support in November 2026. No new application needed – it’s automatic.
What Should Pensioners Do Now?
1. Check Your Account in November: The N10,000 will come with your normal November 2026 pension. No need to visit any ministry.
2. Enrol for Free Health Insurance: If you’re 65+, head to your LGA health insurance desk with your pension ID. It’s free and covers quality care across the state.
3. Verify Your Gratuity Status: If you retired between 2012 and now and are still owed gratuity, keep an eye on the Ministry of Finance releases – the last N11bn is slated for clearance before May 2027.
4. Stay Organised: The NUP says it will release a payment schedule. Follow only official NUP and Akwa Ibom State Government channels to avoid scams.
It’s one thing to be retired. It’s another to feel retired and respected. For once, Akwa Ibom’s senior citizens can say they feel both.
