Got that SMS about N50k from the Federal Government? It's real, and payments have started.
So here's what's happening.
The Federal Government has officially kicked off its new N50,000 cash relief scheme. According to a statement sighted by cbinews.tv, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced on October 30th that disbursement has begun under the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention.
It's a presidential initiative, and the idea is simple: put cash directly in the hands of those feeling the pinch most.
Let's be honest, the cost of living is biting hard. With food inflation still hovering above 30% and a 50kg bag of rice costing more than double what it did two years ago, millions of households are choosing between food, transport and school fees. This N50k is meant to cushion that blow.
Under the plan, eligible vulnerable Nigerians will receive N50,000 monthly straight into their bank account or mobile wallet to cover essentials.
The ministry says it's working with licensed digital financial service providers to keep it secure and transparent. No middlemen, no cash-in-hand.
You get an SMS from one of the licensed providers asking for your consent.
The Minister insists that the SMS is genuine.
Once you consent, the money is paid directly to you.
The amount will be reviewed regularly as the cost of living changes.
This isn't Nigeria's first cash transfer. We've had the Conditional Cash Transfer, where households got N5,000, later N25,000, under the National Social Safety-Net Programme. That scheme was plagued by complaints about transparency and beneficiary lists. This new N50k intervention appears to be its replacement – bigger, monthly, and leaning heavily on digital payments to cut out diversion.
If you're on the National Social Register as vulnerable, watch your phone. Don't click random links, and don't pay anyone to "register" you. Wait for the official SMS from a licensed provider, give consent, and confirm the payment in your account/wallet.
For now, cbinewstv.com will track how the rollout goes and who actually gets paid.
