He's back, and he’s got a promotion habit West Ham desperately needs.
In a move that just feels right, West Ham United have turned to a familiar face. A day after sacking Nuno Espírito Santo, the Hammers have appointed former captain Scott Parker as their new head coach.
The club confirmed on Wednesday that Parker, 46, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and will take charge straight away for tonight's EFL Championship clash against Cardiff City.
This isn't just any appointment. For Parker, this is home.
He made 129 appearances for West Ham between 2007 and 2011, winning Hammer of the Year three seasons on the trot, a proper fan favourite. In 2010/11, he even became only the second Hammer after the great Bobby Moore to win the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year, despite the club going down that year. That tells you everything about the connection he had with the fanbase.
And he feels it too.
“It is a very proud moment for me to return to a Club that means so much to my family and me. A lot of very fond memories, four years of probably the best football I played in my career,” Parker said. “There was a warmth, a love, a feeling that I probably didn’t have anywhere else.”
That warmth is back. He’ll be working alongside West Ham legends Steve Potts and Mark Noble, plus coaches Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine.
Let's be blunt: West Ham need to get out of the Championship, fast.
Parker's CV in this division is almost flawless. He is a promotion specialist:
Fulham (2020) – promoted via the play-offs
Bournemouth (2022) – automatic promotion
Burnley (2024/25) – champions, and he was named Championship Manager of the Season
Three times in this league, three times promoted. That's a 100% record no other active manager can match.
West Ham are where no one expected them to be. After Nuno Espírito Santo arrived in September 2025 from Nottingham Forest, the review of their slow start to the Championship season was damning enough for the board to act. Nuno, assistant Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa are all out.
The task for Parker is clear: bring consistency. As he put it, “I’ve been in this division three times, and I’ve got out of this division three times. This is a tough division; there is absolutely no denying it.”
With backing from chairman Daniel Křetínský and vice-chair Karim Virani, the brief is simple — Premier League return, as quickly as possible.
Tonight: Baptism of fire. Parker takes the dugout for Cardiff City at home.
This week: The club will confirm his full backroom structure.
This season: Can he make it four promotions from four? The Hammers are banking on it.
It’s a romantic appointment with hard-nosed logic behind it. As reported by cbinews.tv, the prodigal son is back to lead the rescue mission.
