23 years, 243 caps, 146 goals, and one last emotional goodbye. Cristiano Ronaldo has hung up his Portugal boots.
Here's the moment no Portugal fan thought would actually come.
According to cbinews.tv, Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, announced his international retirement on Thursday morning in a heartfelt social media post.
“Today I finish my walk on the pitch with the national team. I leave with my head held high, with pride in the path I took, and with the awareness that I gave everything I had for Portugal,” he wrote.
And honestly? He did.
The numbers are just silly:
Let’s put it in context. Ronaldo made his debut back in 2003 as a skinny teenager from Madeira. He leaves as international football’s all-time top scorer, 146 goals in 243 appearances. Five World Cups, six Euros, and that night in Paris in 2016 when he captained Portugal to their first ever major trophy. No Portuguese player comes close.
This wasn’t just about goals. In his statement, Ronaldo said something quite moving:
“The goals pass, the cups are in museums, the records end up being beaten. But there is something that time can never erase, the place we occupy in people’s hearts.”
He went on to say his childhood dream was to be the best player in the world, but representing Portugal ended up being the bigger victory: “Portugal will always be in me. Forever.”
You could feel the end was nearing. As reported by cbinews.tv, there were murmurs after the last international break, a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus after he was left on the bench for Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win over Norway.
This is bigger than football. Ronaldo was Portugal’s global identity for two decades. For a generation of kids from Funchal to Lagos to London, he was the reason they watched international football. His retirement officially closes the Ronaldo-Messi international rivalry era.
What next for Portugal?
The timing is huge. Portugal are now forced to rebuild ahead of the 2026 World Cup cycle and 2028 Euros without their talisman. The spotlight shifts fully to the next generation, João Félix, Rafael Leão, Gonçalo Ramos. And for Ronaldo? It’s club focus only now with Al-Nassr, plus whatever comes next.
End of an international career, but what a career it was.
