From punchlines to panic, how a normal workday almost cost Broda Shaggi his life. He heard a bang, then saw blood. This is his second chance.
It’s the comeback fans prayed for.
Nigerian comedy star Samuel Perry, aka Broda Shaggi, is back, seven months after a stray bullet hit him, and Nigerians are breathing a sigh of relief.
In an emotional video titled ‘Second Chance (The Story)’ posted to his YouTube channel late Wednesday, the 32-year-old skit maker broke his silence.
“We were done shooting and got stuck in traffic. Suddenly, I heard a loud bang and everywhere went silent. I could see people talking, but I couldn’t hear anything. Then I touched my hip and saw blood. That was when I realised I had been hit by a stray bullet.”
Shaggi said it happened on 9 March 2026 after a brand activation near the Sango-Ota Bridge in Ogun State. He blacked out on the way to hospital and spent months off social media, terrified his career and his fans might be gone for good. For context, Broda Shaggi rose from Instagram skits in 2018 to become one of Africa’s most awarded comedians with over 11 million followers.
The comments said it all. @blessingkiikii1925 wrote: “Welcome back, King, we love you, but God's love is best.” Dr Jack Davis added: “Thank God for your life, bro.” Another, Bosede Okunlola, called it “a second chance.” One sceptic, @RubyisReal, asked if the video was real, showing just how surreal the story feels.
This isn’t just a celebrity story. According to data from SBM Intelligence, Nigeria recorded over 700 stray bullet and accidental shooting deaths between 2020 and 2025, many linked to security operations and communal clashes. For entertainers who constantly shoot on location in busy areas, the risk is real.
Shaggi isn’t alone. In 2023, Afrobeats star Bella Shmurda recounted a similar near-miss in Lagos, while Nollywood has lost crew members to on-location security incidents before. It reignites the debate on set safety and gun control enforcement.
Shaggi says he’s fully recovered and back to creating. Fans want answers: where did the bullet come from? Ogun State Police are yet to issue a formal statement on the source of the shooting. For now, his return is a reminder: behind the laughs is a young man who almost didn’t make it home.
