From a dormitory in Chibok to a wedding aisle in America, 12 years after the world shouted #BringBackOurGirls, one of those girls just found her happily ever after.
You remember this story, right?
12 years ago, 14th April 2014, Boko Haram stormed Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State and abducted 276 schoolgirls. It sparked global outrage, that viral #BringBackOurGirls campaign, even Michelle Obama holding the placard.
Well, there's a beautiful update. According to cbinews.tv, one of the survivors, Deborah, has just got married in the United States.
A viral congratulatory message on Monday summed it up perfectly: “From trauma to triumph! A beautiful new beginning!”
And honestly, that's the human angle here. This isn't just a wedding. It's a young woman who lived through one of Nigeria's most traumatic chapters, choosing joy again.
The Chibok abduction changed everything about how we talk about school safety in the North-East. Before Chibok, Boko Haram's attacks on education were under-reported. After Chibok, the world was forced to pay attention.
Of the 276 abducted, 57 escaped within hours. Over the years, more than 100 have been rescued or released through government negotiations, with support from the ICRC and others. But as of 2024, over 80 girls are still unaccounted for, a painful wound for their families.
Deborah is among those who rebuilt their lives, many through education programmes in the US under scholarships for Chibok survivors.
While we celebrate Deborah, this also reminds us the job isn't done. The #BringBackOurGirls movement showed what global pressure can do, but the 2014 incident was followed by similar abductions: Dapchi in 2018, Kankara, and Jangebe. The pattern remains.
Deborah's story, as that message said, is powerful: “Your happiness today is a reminder that even after the deepest pain, there is still room for healing.”
From pain to purpose indeed. We wish her a lifetime of love.
No details of her spouse were disclosed, but we are rooting for her.
