You check into a hotel on a quiet Sunday evening, and you never walk out. That is what reportedly happened in Ekpoma at the weekend,d and it has left many people in shock.
Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, slumped and died inside a hotel room in the Mosco area.
According to the Edo State Police Command, he had lodged with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker identified as Angela Defa Jacob. He reportedly sent her out to buy water, and when she returned,d she met him lying lifeless.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed it on Tuesday, October 6. She said the hotel owner, the manager and the young woman are now in custody while the investigation continues.
The body has been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The university PRO, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, also confirmed Uwuigbe was their staff but insisted it happened outside campus. His line was clear: this is his private life, the lady is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution.
At its core, this is not just a headline. It is a lecturer who did not return home, students who will notice an empty office, and a young woman who is now in custody after what should have been a routine encounter.
This matter touches on personal health, public safety and how we treat vulnerable people. It also shows how quickly a private moment can become a police case and a campus talking point.
It is being alleged that intimacy took place, the lecturer complained of thirst, the companion stepped out, and he slumped alone. Police say there is no cause of death yet.
The next step is an autopsy to confirm the cause of death, statements from those in custody, and possible release if no foul play is found. University says it will not comment further as it is off campus.
